Review

The music in this movie is way better than you’d think. Most people don’t remember it either, but it really helps build the required mood at any point in the story. The minions are great at first watch, especially for kids, if they are in small doses. Overall, the movie has a lot of heart - carried by the girls and Gru’s relationship - which is what makes the story worth the watch. It’s a fun movie, and there’s enough comic relief and standard animated movie things to make it rewatchable.

Spoiler Territory

Gru’s character arc is great, with his hilarious initial characterisation and his somewhat relatable troubles, to his eventual maturity and happiness with the girls. Vector is surprisingly funny, even if he probably dies in the end. The plot with the bank was pretty boring, and the orphanage lady was pretty much the worst. Agnes’ unicorn obsession is an acceptable amount of cute, and Miranda Cosgrove’s Margot makes up most of the movie along with Steve Carrell’s now-iconic Gru.
