Review
I'm going to confess, I only watched this movie because I love Ferris Bueller's Day Off, and I heard Sloane (Mia Sara, who I'm kind of in love with) from that was going to be in this. But then I saw Tom Cruise in the cast, and I thought, huh, “why not?” Turns out it's pretty interesting. 80s movies were just something else. Mia Sara (Lily) and Tom Cruise (Jack) are both really pretty in this one, but there isn't too much chemistry. It's not easy to have chemistry with Tom Cruise, so not a big deal. Supporting cast are better than you'd think acting-wise, but VERY campy costumes. The first scene was pretty rightly terrifying and disgusting, if slightly campy, and the villain monologue was pretty impressive. Mia Sara's introduction was, of course, awesome - a fairy if I ever saw one. Adorable. The costumes and sets have a very Star Wars feel to them, which I'm here for. Highkey the bad guy is the best character in the story. The bad guy's design is completely awful, but scary, and his voice is AWESOME. His end monologue is great, and the conclusion isn't bad. Cinematography and particularly the main score was quite good (reminiscent of Leia's theme in star wars). The whole “instant night” thing that happened was pretty unexpected. The random kid, Gump, who woke Jack up was pretty weird, “I know everything”. But the kid's acting was pretty great. And he almost died of frustration? Whatever, that whole riddle scene was pretty wack. The whole river scene with the weird cannibal witch thing was pretty scary and awesome, so props to Jack for that. Also Jack rejecting the fairy was good. The ballet scene with Mia Sara is actually so well done, too.
