Review
Never thought I'd write that name in the winner's column, but here we are. Kristen Stewart acts in this movie almost completely alone, and she's actually phenomenal. She's always been beautiful, but as an incarnation of everyone's beloved Princess Diana, she gains the dignity and purity that will make anyone sympathetic to her struggles. Knowing that something similar to this happened in real life is only that much more impactful, and she pulls off the tragic helplessness brilliantly. The direction is actually amazing too - I usually like bright colours in a movie, but the filter that they put on the camera really fits the royal palette. The costumes are great, especially the one with the veil. Of course, the subject matter can be really really heavy, which is part of what makes this movie so important, but you also can't rewatch too often. The bulimia scenes and the mass eating were both heartbreaking. The scenes with Diana and the kids are particularly endearing, and Maggie (Sally Hawkins) is a welcome surprise in the third act. The Anne Boleyn comparisons are interesting, but went a little over my head. Jack Farthing's Charles is just so annoying, which means he's probably about right. The end scene is really nice to watch, and I love how at peace she is - saying Spencer and taking back whatever ground she can is definitely really meaningful. I quite liked the movie, even if it made me pretty sad.
